Acupuncture Questions

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that is thousands of years old. It is the insertion of very fine, sterilized needles into specific body locations, called acupoints. There are several hundred acupoints on the human body, each with a unique energetic function in treating disease. Acupuncture is very safe and effective when administered by a licensed professional. It’s virtually painless and most people find the treatment itself to be relaxing and nurturing. For any acupuncture session, it is best to not overwork or overeat prior to treatment.

What does Acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can treat any disease, disorder or imbalance.  Acupuncture has gained notoriety in the west for treating musculo-skeletal disorders such as arthritis, and pain syndromes, but it is also very effective at treating:

  • Digestive complaints such as heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, ulcers, colitis and hemorrhoids.
  • Female gynecological disorders such as menopausal hot flashes, night sweats, painful periods, infertility and uterine fibroids.
  • Male prostate problems, low sex drive and erectile dysfunction.
  • Fatigue, stress, anxiety and depression.
  • Arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, and general aches and pains.
  • Health maintenance and prevention of disease.

What is an Acupuncture treatment like?
The first session generally lasts 1.5-2 hours and begins with a comprehensive interview and medical intake. After the interview, the patient lies on the treatment table and the needles are inserted. The patient then relaxes in a serene environment, listening to music, for up to a half hour. Afterward, an herbal formula may be advised, often along with dietary suggestions. Subsequent treatments usually last one hour.

How many Acupuncture treatments will be needed?
Patients usually report improvement in their symptoms after one treatment, but it may take 4-6 treatments before significant improvement is noted. The longer the health problem has existed, the longer it typically takes to treat or cure it. Acupuncture treatment in China is daily for a couple of weeks until the problem is cured or the symptoms cease. Americans generally prefer one-two treatments per week maximum, resulting in a longer total treatment period.

Does Acupuncture hurt?
Most patients feel a slight sting when the needle is inserted into the body. Afterward, an energy sensation or the gathering of qi may be felt in the area local to the needle or along the course of the meridian. Most people find it a pleasant sensation. If the patient continues to feel pain after the needle has been inserted, or if a “nervy” pain is felt, the needle is withdrawn and reinserted. Some patients don’t feel any sensation at all.

What should I wear to an Acupuncture session?
Many of the most powerful acupoints are located below the elbow and below the knee. Patients usually remove their shoes and socks, and roll up shirt sleeves for the treatment to begin. Sometimes the back or torso is needled, in which case a hospital gown is provided after the patient disrobes. In general, dress comfortably for an acupuncture session. Sweat pants, a t-shirt, and shoes which can be easily removed are perfect! Finally, please remove all make-up prior to a facial rejuvenation session.

Can I eat or exercise before or after an Acupuncture treatment?
It’s best not to come to an acupuncture treatment excessively hungry or tired. Fainting is a possibility with acupuncture and low blood sugar or fatigue increases its risk. After a session, it is advised to drink plenty of water and get enough rest. Exercise, either before or after a treatment, is allowable provided it is not too strenuous or overtaxing. For any acupuncture session, it is best to not overwork or overeat prior to treatment.

What are the risks of Acupuncture?
When performed by a licensed acupuncturist, acupuncture is very safe. Only sterilized, one-time use needles are used and the body point is prepared with an alcohol swab. Of course, anytime the skin is punctured there is the possibility of infection. Additionally, acupuncture powerfully moves energy in the body, which can result in lightheadedness, fainting, or nausea. After the needle is removed, bleeding may occur and a bruise or hematoma may form. If you are a hemophiliac or are on blood thinners, acupuncture may be inappropriate.

I had Acupuncture years ago and didn’t like it. Have things changed?
Although acupuncture as a medicine has remained unchanged for thousands of years, the tools with which it is performed have improved. In the past, acupuncture needles were thicker, less smooth, and often painful upon insertion. These were stainless steel needles that were sterilized and re-used after each patient. Today, we only use pre-sterilized, single-use needles that are much thinner and smoother than ever before. These needles ensure quick insertion and removal with little to no pain. Additionally, there is very little chance of any kind of infection resulting from these single-use, sterilized needles. Moreover, many new tools have been developed that offer needle-free acupuncture, such as point stimulation using laser light, light emitting diodes, etc. Electroacupuncture machines (which provide gentle electrical stimulation of the acupoint) have also improved greatly over the last several years, proving more effective and less painful than older machines.

What is the Facial Rejuvenation Service?
This service is provided by Leslie Kancir. First, you are interviewed and your face is analyzed. The session then begins with acupuncture of facial and body acupoints. You relax for up to a half hour and the session is finished with a relaxing facial massage with a nourishing facial cream. Typically, you’ll notice improvement in fine lines, discoloration and sagging after the first treatment, but a series of 10 treatments is highly recommended, to fully address each case. Results should last a year or more, with proper skin care.

What should I do before any Acupuncture or Facial Rejuvenation Treatment?
Please come to your treatments wearing comfortable clothes. Gowns are provided if it is necessary to needle the back or abdomen. Many of the most powerful acupoints are located below the elbow and below the knee, so it is advised to wear shirts and pants that can be rolled up. Please remove all makeup prior to a Facial Rejuvenation session. For any acupuncture session, it is best to not overwork or overeat prior to treatment.

Chiropractic Questions

What is Chiropractic care?
Chiropractic can be broken down into: “cheir” meaning hand and “prattein” meaning to do (Taber’s cyclopedic medical dictionary, 17th edition). So, it truly means to practice with your hands. So chiropractic is a method of treatment that reduces nerve pressure on nerves by a method of treatment called an adjustment.

Does a Chiropractic adjustment hurt?
It may. But, adjustments, typically are not painful. Sometimes you might experience slight pain during and or after the adjustment. Ice after the treatment helps with this discomfort. You may hear a popping sound when you are adjusted. that popping sound is normal. It’s gas releasing from your joints. It’s the same thing as if you would squeeze a balloon until it “pops.”

How long will it take to “fix me?”
This depends upon you as the patient. If you follow instructions and recommendations it will be less time. If you don’t it will be a longer road to recovery. I would like to have you feel better quicker than to have you stay in care forever. In my professional experience as a Chiropractor each body is different. Will you feel better after one adjustment? Maybe. Will you feel better after six adjustments? Maybe. Will you feel better after 14 adjustments? You should. It truly depends on what your life is like and the stresses in your life. With all of that being said, we should really see some sort of improvement within 6 visits.

Do I have to visit a Chiropractor on a frequent/regular basis?
It really does depend on what the condition is. For the problem you come in for, we should see results quickly. If you would like to get regular “tune-ups” after the initial complaint/problem is worked out, you can certainly do so.

Can you adjust me without force?
There are many ways to adjust a joint with force and with low force. If you do not have any force, then the adjustment is not being applied.

Chiropractic is for neck pain, back pain and headache pain only, right?
It is the most frequent form of care for those conditions, but it’s not the only thing that Chiropractors can address. I personally have worked successfully with patients with heartburn, migraines, shoulder problems, elbow and wrist problems and many other problems or illnesses.

Is Chiropractic care expensive?
It depends on your definition of expensive. What I mean is, do you like to be in pain or discomfort? What’s the price for you to be out of pain or discomfort? Can you really put a price on feeling well? I do accept some health insurances plans and payment plans can be discussed as well.

What makes you different from other Chiropractors?
I assess each patient on an individual basis. I will ask specific questions and try to guide you the best way possible, whether I send you off to a massage therapist, acupuncturist or another type of modality that would best serve you.

Massage Therapy Questions

What is a massage therapist?
Massage therapists have completed many hours of education which includes a variety of bodywork techniques, extensive anatomy and physiology and knowledge of when massage is and is not appropriate.

What’s the first massage therapy appointment like?
Your massage therapist will begin by asking you general health questions since there are some conditions for which massage is not appropriate. Depending on the techniques used you may or may not need to undress. For full body massages most people undress completely and are covered by a sheet. You may undress only to your comfort level. Your therapist will give you privacy to undress and you will be covered except for the area being worked. You will relax on a table designed for your comfort and may be offered cushions for more support. The room will be warm and quiet, often with soft music to set a relaxing mood.

Does massage therapy hurt?
Working in the area of an injury or chronic pain may at first cause some discomfort, which usually lessens in the first few minutes. Your massage therapist knows ways to minimize pain, and will work carefully with what feels right to you. Always tell your therapist if you feel any discomfort.

How long is a massage therapy session?
An hour is a common session length. This gives time for a deeply relaxing full body massage or more in-depth work on a particular area, for example back, neck and shoulders. Half-hour sessions are a good introduction to bodywork and an hour and a half is usually enough time to address the whole body with special attention to problem areas.

What should I expect after my massage?
Massage and bodywork can be relaxing, affecting all your body systems. Give yourself a moment to reorient before slowly getting up. After a session, most people feel very relaxed. Many experience freedom from aches and pains that have built up over months of tension or repetitive activity. Some people experience an increase in energy that can last for several days. Sometimes you may notice changes over the following days, such as pain relief, increased mobility, or reduced stress.

How can massage help me?

  • Reducing stress gives you more energy, reduces your likelihood of injury and illness.
  • Relieves many types of muscles tension from muscle cramps to habitual clenched jaw or tight shoulders.
  • After vigorous exercise leaves you tired and sore, massage increases circulation, which removes waste products and brings into the muscles needed oxygen and nutrients to speed healing of muscle tissue.
  • Increase range of motion in the joints due to muscle tension.
  • Improve posture by releasing restrictions in the muscles, joints and surrounding tissues, freeing your body to return to a more natural posture.
